OAXACA, MEXICO & PORTLAND, OREGON ARTISTS EXCHANGE
During the month of February, I had the pleasure of working with several wonderfully talented artists in Oaxaca, Mexico. We have renewed our Mexico / Oregon exchange and will welcome our Oaxacan artists to Portland in March 2025, where they will showcase their work, work with local artists, and explore art through our beautiful State.
This project is continuing thanks to the support of generous private donors, Oregon Potters Association (OPA), and the Portland Mexican Consulate office.

At the heart of the Oregon Potters Association's international cultural exchange programs lies a profound conviction in the transformative power of clay and ceramics. This art form, in all its versatility, serves as a universal language, reaching across geographical borders, cultural disparities, and language barriers. Its unique capability to forge connections and foster understanding is unparalleled, making it a powerful agent of change.
The essence of our exchanges with ceramic artists from the diverse landscapes of Hokkaido, Japan and Oaxaca, Mexico embody this belief. These programs transcend the mere exchange of pottery skills or techniques; they foster a dialogue between cultures, a sharing of unique perspectives, and a celebration of diversity in the world of ceramic art. Additionally, these programs play a pivotal role in preserving and propagating the rich cultural traditions associated with clay art, thereby keeping these cultural art forms alive.
Our initiatives are fuelled by an aspiration to create a global community of ceramic artists that's expansive and inclusive. We dream of a world where clay art acts as a bridge between cultures, fostering mutual respect, understanding, and shared learning. By crossing borders and breaking down barriers, we create an environment that encourages mutual growth and learning.
Our endeavors go beyond creating a platform for cultural exchange. We are deeply committed to providing ceramic artists from diverse cultures and backgrounds with opportunities that might otherwise be beyond their reach. By inviting these artists to Portland, we aim to give them a platform to showcase their unique pottery traditions, gain international exposure, and foster personal growth through interactions with other artists.
In turn, our members gain invaluable insights and experiences. The opportunity to delve into the rich, diverse pottery traditions of Hokkaido and Oaxaca broadens their artistic horizons and deepens their understanding of the global clay art landscape. It's this exchange of ideas, techniques, and experiences that enriches their artistic repertoire, fostering a sense of global artistic community.
Beyond the artists involved in these exchanges, our initiatives have a broader impact on the community. We bring a slice of Hokkaido and Oaxaca's ceramic arts to Portland through workshops, presentations, Pop-Up shows, and the grand OPA Showcase. We offer our members, and the wider Portland community, a unique chance to experience and appreciate the rich pottery traditions of these regions first-hand.
But these initiatives go beyond just ceramic art; they focus on the artists behind the work. Each exchange, workshop, and presentation reveals the story of not just a ceramic artist, but a unique individual—highlighting their journey, experiences, challenges, trials, triumphs, and their true selves. We believe in celebrating these stories, hoping to inspire others to embark on their own journeys in ceramic art.
In conclusion, our international cultural exchange program is driven by our firm belief in the power of clay art to create connections, foster understanding, and build a global community of ceramic artists. We strive to provide opportunities for ceramic artists to grow, express themselves, and connect with others, while simultaneously enriching our local community with diverse and enriching ceramic art experiences. The driving force and the heart behind our initiatives is our aspiration to see a world where ceramic art is a shared language, a common thread that unites us all, regardless of our geographical or cultural origins. We invite you, our potential benefactors, to join us in this journey and help us make this vision a reality.
